Whether it be a romantic city break in Rome or a week relaxing by the pool in the sunny climates of Spain, we all love a European holiday. For the majority of us flying is the preferred method of transport. Easy, quick and fairly cheap, flying is normally our first port of call and although it has its many advantages, there are parts of your chosen destination that you’re missing out on when you choose to jump on a plane. Europe is home to some breath taking roads which can only be seen by car. From the UK to Norway to Romania, there are many road trips that are waiting to be explored.

Although it’s an option to hire a car in your holiday destination, it’s important that your vehicle is in good condition and ready for the journey ahead. Making sure the vehicle has a full MOT and service before you set off is really important. Before you begin your trip it’s best to book your car into a garage like Kwik Fit so that you’re journey will be as smooth as possible and leaving you nothing to worry about.

Route One, Iceland

Over the past few years Iceland has grown in popularity and is slowly creeping to the top of many of our bucket lists. With an estimated 7-10 days of journey time and around 300 miles of open roads, Route One is the best way to explore Iceland’s natural beauty.

Starting in the capital Reykjavik, the route will take you on a hair raising journey past many of the volcanoes, waterfalls and lava fields that Iceland has to offer, allowing for beautiful scenery and perfect photo opportunities. As the road trip comes to an end, the final part passes a stretch of coastline that isn’t to be missed. The Westfjords and Snæfellsnes peninsula offer stunning views and are sure to top of what’s sure to be an unforgettable journey.

Trollstigen, Norway

Popular with motor enthusiast, this road trip is almost hard to believe is real due to its breath taking scenery and the many bends that are waiting to be tackled. Looking at pictures it’s hard to believe that these are real images and not something from a film. The journey is expected to take around 3 hours and is sure to leave you wanting more.

Beginning in the town of Andalsnes and ending in the village of Valldal, the trip is full of beautiful scenery including mountains, waterfalls and the distant views of the road unfolding before your eyes. Taking you over a stone bridge above the Stigfossen waterfall around 1,050ft high, this journey is sure to leave you lost for words. With 4 miles of steep inclines and tight hairpins it’s one for the thrill-seekers but needs to be driven with caution.

Romantische Strasse, Germany

Hosting picturesque towns, palaces and castles, this journey is like something from a Disney fairy-tale. Offering endless photo opportunities of some of the country’s most elegant and artistic buildings, this is a firm favourite for any fans of architecture who are looking for some time away.

Starting in the city of Würzburg this road trip will take you on a winding journey through southern Germany, offering plenty of stops to take a look at some of the amazing architecture on offer. During the trip you will pass the medieval town of Tauberbischofsheim, close to the Tauber river and then onto the town of Bad Mergentheim. The journey ends in the town of Füssen and lasts for around 220 miles. In order to truly appreciate the beauty of the journey, it’s recommended to go between spring and autumn.

Europe is home to some of the best road trips in the world and many of us aren’t aware of them. Have you been on any European road trips or have any you’d like to explore?
