Uncouth

The smell of freshly fried french fries from McDonalds are intoxicating. I don’t know what it is about their fries, maybe its the extra salt…the crispness..whatever…they are good. I don’t like burger king, and I’ll eat Wendy’s fries by default because I do love their Spicy Chicken Sandwich (#6), but McDonald’s fries are definitely my favorite.
I also enjoy their McFlurries and Chipotle Chicken snack wraps. Someone on twitter the other day unabashedly asked “WHY?” when I said I wanted a snack wrap, as if I’m not supposed to like them or eat them. I don’t get what the big deal is, they are fast, cheap, and easy to eat…and dare I say it? They are kind of tasty. Or maybe I wouldn’t really know because I eat them when I’m 1. starving and 2. have no time to use a knife and fork …and you know, when you’re hungry everything tastes good.

I had a small used truffle left over, and I’ve had this for over 2 weeks now so I knew I had to finish it off before the scent totally went away…so I decided to dust the rest onto some fries. Just two of my favorite things together. Forget fancy BS hors d’oeuvres for your next dinner party, just buy a bunch of fries and sprinkle truffles on them.

Funny how you burned the bag in the end.
McDonald’s does have the best fries. I remember the big hoopla when Burger King changed their fries, but to me they are rather tasteless.
If my family didn’t have such a high history of bad cholesterol, I could eat McD’s fries and Popeyes extra spicy fried chicken more than the two times a year I allow myself!
maybe it is the beef flavoring on the fries
I absolutely love their grilled chicken ranch snack wraps with sriracha (spelling) sauce on them! LOVE!!!
I love their fries as well. They are the only place I go to when I am starving and hungry and feel weak. I don’t know why people think you shouldn’t go there. I find it strange as well. Your photos are great. I think it must be the salt on their fries. They are just perfect. MMMMMM =) xoxo
Yeah! I like their fries, we all have our guilty pleasures, cut us some slack!
haha, this is cool. i admit to liking mcdonald’s fries, too. i like them quite a lot, actually. there, i said it!
hahaha i do this to my macdonald’s fries too!… okay with truffle oil, minced garlic, parm reggiano, and loads of black pepper. not quite as refined as the luxirare version =P
truffle oil macdonald fries + lindemann’s frambois lambic float + tony b. no reservations Mondays used to be my all time favorite combo. i need to start this up again. i swear i used to call it my happy place.
I am the less talented version of you. i love weird junk food like jack in the box jalapeno poopers with buttermilk house sauce. I love calf hair and stingray clutches. I die for french macaroons. I love to take pictures with my 85mm lens.i see my meal and stuff I do as an editorial. the mcD pix made me laugh out loud. love.
Fries and truffle? WOW!
This article does some serious analysis and explores how the fries are likely made and why they taste the way they do: http://aht.seriouseats.com/archives/2010/05/the-burger-lab-how-to-make-perfect-mcdonalds-style-french-fries.html
DJ – OH thanks for that ! I’m going to read it when I have more time. I’ve always wondered why certain fries are so delicious.
@Fatiha- the combo is actually quite common. Delicious though!
I never thought a post about McDonald’s french fries could be so artful and intriguing. Coming from you it is not much of a surprise though. And yes those fries are delicious. Healthy/gourmet food is great but sometimes you just want to eat something purely for pleasure and there is nothing wrong with that!
ever had the seaweed shaken fries from mcd’s in hong kong? it adds a sweetness to the familiar saltiness…or you can just buy some furikake & sprinkle it on yourself
just as yummy :d
Um, I have a crush on you. #1, I love McDonald’s fries and #2, I can’t go more than a week without something truffle. If it comes down to it, I’ll go to the market and buy a wedge of black truffle cheese…yumm. Xo Valerie
Check out my most recent posting, which is dedicated to mod-wear and one of my favorite old-time flicks, Two for the Road.

What a juxtaposition! Well done!
Isn’t the smell in Mickey Ds actually sprayed?
And yup, french fries are my weakness also..
I like McDonald’s fries too but only when they’re freshly made and still hot and crispy. For some reason once they’re cold they get really soggy and flavorless and have a strange texture, why is that!? Cold fries are never good but I noticed with McDonald’s the difference from hot to cold is extreme.
I’ve never had their snack wraps but I used to love McFlurries!
I’m a Wendy’s 99 cent menu girl through and through!
I laughed at the “when you’re hungry anything tastes good.” Since I really dislike seeing food wasted, I’ll save take out leftovers I’m not so crazy about until I’m starving.
haha that photo of the McD’s bag burning is classic.
I haven’t eaten the food in years but recently treated myself twice in one week. Obviously the food is not healthy….even the snack wraps have through the roof sodium servings….but I was happy to find I could get a small bottle of water with my meal, rather than a coke.
Plus, the $3 mac snacks are the perfect serving size. They’re not too big, but have just enough burger to satisfy a late-night burger craving.
Still, McDonald’s will never be my first choice for food (even for a quick bite) but I don’t think you have to feel guilty about it either!
Great photos!
I don’t care about ever eating Burger King or Wendy’s or any of those ever again, but once every few months I need two McDonald’s hamburgers and a medium fries. Sigh. There is nothing like it.
I love gourmet food and am very into cooking and the quality of my ingredients 95% of the time, but there are moments where I wouldn’t take ANY haute cuisine over a container of Mickey D fries. And there’s no shame in that!
Truffles and fries. Yum.
mcdonalds tasting good ??? no way.
i recommend “food, inc.” documentary.
^^
Have you ever seen “the future of food” the whole documentary talks about genetically modified vegetables, corn, and fruit…food using GMOs so that their shelf life can increase and the vegetables can grow bigger (tomatoes for example). Genetically modified foods have been linked to cancer in women. All the food you buy in supermarkets is contaminated in one way or another. But, I guess you grow all your fruits and veggies from scratch? I don’t see the point in knocking Mcdonald’s, the veggies you get which look innocent can be just as bad.
sweetie, fast food is the shit, but street food is what’s up. you *need* to do a post on tacos al pastor and agua de horchata in the near future.
I’m still on the hunt for truffles – can’t seem to find them in my city. This looks like such a great idea though x

I loathe food snobs. There’s nothing worse then someone on their high horse about food. Talk about a kill joy. We all know McDonald’s is unhealthy. It’s a “guilty pleasure”, although I hate the assigning guilt to food as if fries versus salad is some sort of moral dilemma. McDonald’s tastes good. YES IT DOES. Especially after a night of drinking, a quarter pounder w/ cheese and fries makes everything ok.
@Nia could not agree with you more. add some 6 piece chicken nuggets in there too.
haha…your truffle mania is out of control! your website is going to destroy my laptop because every time i look at your food posts i drool all over my keyboard.
i really love mcd’s fries. i didn’t think they were all that special when i was a kid but as i got older i started to like them better than any other fast food french fry.
and i agree with nia above me…i hate food snobbery!
one more thing (this is totally off-topic)…i’ve noticed that there is something about you and/or your blog that somehow compels people to leave more intelligent/well thought-out comments on your posts. even the more negative comments seem to be at a higher level than most of the internet hater comments other blogs get. i find that to be pretty cool!
Where is the Ketchup?
This post is incredibly awesome. I love that you eat crazy intricate sushi and Mcd’s fries (but not in the same sitting!). Because there is nothing wrong with that. Inspirational.
The truffles must make it so yummy! In Hong Kong they have “Shake Shake Fries” at McD’s — they give you seasoning and a big paper bag so you can shake the fries with the seasoning in them.
i dont care what kind of chef anyone is, or what kind of palate you have, everyone has that guilty micky dees pleasure once in a while. its the fish n fries for me
Hi, I just uploaded my blog! Take a look!

xxxxx
Michael.
you always amaze me, even with mcdonalds. impressive.
mcdonalds lol
@ Robyn: that combo sounds positively divine. imma try that next
You should totally try their apple pie mcflurry if you haven’t already! It’s off-menu: you have to explain to them how to make it, and sometimes they won’t do it, but it’s worth a shot. =]
@ ivy
uhm, that sounds incredible. Who orders stuff at McD’s “off menu”? It’s not like some back alley joint for “locals only” haha. Amazing.
This is my first comment. I won’t lie. I love this post so much. I love this blog so much.
I love that you have wonderful designs that look like something I would make and wear myself.
I love that you cook luxurious food that I drool over, but unashamedly enjoy things like McDonald’s. I want to make everything and have fancy dinner parties.
Your blog really inspires me! I have been wanting to start a blog of my own and I hope that when I do it turns out even half as cool as yours <3
I also love your dog <3
ahahahahah! this just made you seem so much more human to me
what a combination: mcdonalds and truffles! perhaps something to try!
I’d love to try this – it is the physical definition of an oxymoron. My sister loves McDonalds french fries dipped in ice cream – don’t try that one.
I love the imagery of the burning bag.
Fashion Stereotype
this is life. i had a drunken large fries last night at delancey st mcdonalds, straight out the bubbling vat of grease, and it was simply divine. i do not regret it, despite hardly remembering it.
I want to go there….
http://oakvintage.com/
And to think I was the only one. I love MCD’s fries and mcflurries. And unsurprisingly, myflurries taste better in other countries
Love the nonchalant attitude of this post. I love fries. I just consumed something guilty today too haha it keeps me sane.
i love MCD’s
YES! Mcdonald fries are the best!

@rf thanks RF somebody has already linked to it.
hi,
did you know that you are amazing and my idol??
I’m surprise you fries even made it home – untouched. I eat them as soon as the cashier hands it to me
I love the irony of the mcdonald’s fries and truffle shavings! Great combo
too gangstalicious.
they fry their fries in beef tallow, i read in fast food nation
@jenny heh doesn’t really scare me.
Amazing idea! Have you tried making your own fries with your deliciously decadent truffle oil? Very over the top but, so killer. XO
http://poppy-maxwell.blogspot.com/
I love setting the last fry on fire. They really burn for a long time!
Jenny, they no longer use beef fat to fry the fries, sadly.
At most McDonald’s they’re happy to tell you how fresh the fries are. I always wait for a new hot batch that burns my fingers.
that looks so savory and delicious. I ate a bag of their hot fries the other day, they really do have the best ones.
I aeem to be the only one here who doesn;t like macdonalds fries, or relly any other fries. I have a very delicate palate, naan bread and cheesy doritos are spicy to me, and I never use salt, hence why I never goto Macdonalds, the food makes me literally feel sick. Iam not judging anyone who does, I am envious.
I love your transition from a few mouth watering McDonald’s french fries photos (that made me want to get some for myself), to the burning of their signature and worldly know fry carton. Thanks for sharing.
Dana
nom!
I love your blog, your photos, your exploratory mindset. I am surprised no one has brought up the quality issue of food. I think in our separation between supermarket packaging and the farm we forget that meat comes from a living organism, just like a plant is a living organism. We all know when you treat a plant like shit it does not flourish. It seems odd to not relate this to the other food we eat. How is it we expect our animals to produce healthy meat in deplorable conditions that require antibiotics and hormones to remain feasible?
Everyone loves McDonald’s french fries. But when McDonald’s India starts growing ConAgra russets outside of Mumbai some serious ecological action is taking place. In some ways this is biological terrorism.
We all want to enjoy our food, and having an immediate supply of delicious food is an important commodity of the modern American lifestyle. Beside the personal cost (we all know of the health risks involved), are there larger dangers here? What is the personal cost of thirty minutes of hunger compared to the long term effect on the health of a society and a species? Once McDonald’s is the largest meat buyer in America, all producers aim for that specification. ALL OF YOUR MEAT IS MCDONALD’S BEEF.
Bon Appetit.
Hi Luxirare,
I don’t want to be a freak or anything, but please update soon as I’m going through withdrawals from your blog!!!!!!!!
xox
There’s a little lunch restaurant in Seattle called the Baguette Box that makes lovely truffles fries. If you’re ever on the west coast you should check it out!

Hayhay!

Man, the way you used the lighting and background for the McDonald’s bag makes me think you can make everything in the universe look impressive and pretty.
McDonald’s definitely has the best fries. I hope they do not change them like Wendy’s did with theirs.
Wendy’s changes fries. What was wrong with the old ones?
