“research”
Most of you already know how much I love old Versace. I’ve posted about his designs a long while ago..There is nothing intellectual about his work, just genuinely gratuitous…in the best way possible. Far from Raf Simons’ work anyway (another designer I admire).

I feel like Carla Bruni + Versace is the equivalent of apple pie + vanilla ice cream.

Those Marilyn Monroe sequined leggings are incredible. WANT.

Oh man, spectacular. Maybe it’s the sun king imagery that has me thinking this, but I feel like Versace’s aesthetic is like Versailles-era decadence transported to the nineties. Now THAT’S modern aristocracy.

I’m not a fan, but I do love Versace’s old advertisements. Love that you flat out say there is nothing intellectual about it; hilarious (and true).

I especially love the Andy Warhol pop art pieces!

I was skeptical about his designs until I saw some of the pieces at a Met exhibit, they are great. And I agree – just because it is not intellectual doesn’t mean that it’s not beautiful. I’ve also been to his Miami house, where he was murdered, it was quite a strange feeling.

I have a giant, gaping smushy spot in my heart for all the over the top, glorious tackiness that is old Versace. It’s totally gratifying, like biting into a giant hunk of sugary icing, or something. Don’t get me wrong, I love “intellectual” design, well thought out forms, architectural tailoring, a black on nude color palette…but the more time I spend looking it, and wearing it, the more I find myself craving gratuitous ornamentation. It’s like, a disease…It gets to the point where I just want to start giggling madly and THAT’S when it’s time to pull out the sequin face leggings. (MUST FIND THOSE.)
Good job on the research, btw.

And can you tell me who are your favorites bloggers, if any?

I always wonder what his designs would’ve been like if he hadn’t been victim to that senseless tragedy. There’s a new book about the Versace family that came out fairly recently written by a supposed insider who works for the Wall Street Journal. I’m always skeptical of WSJ reporters, so I didn’t pick it up, but it’s supposedly focusing on the family dynamics of the empire.

versace really takes me back to the late 80’s early 90’s. i had the pleasure of working one of his shows when christy, naomi, linda and claudia were modeling. crazy!

saying his stuff is unintellectual is so reductive when you just say how much you love it. do you also mean it can’t be intellectualized? it makes my eyebrows frown.

The first picture reminds me of christopher kane’s versus collection – black dresses and jewelled platforms.
That said, I haven’t worn versace since about 2001.
but Versace’s definitely improved a lot in recent years.
