At Midnight I’ll Take Your Soul & This Night I’ll Possess Your Corpse!

  2. e_ting

Almost better than Lust Caution – In the Mood for Love by Wong Ka Wai – beautiful clothes & colours
Kill Bill 1 – love the anime connection
    Coffee and Cigarettes
    Cinema Paradiso
    Frida
Jalainur – dazzling landscapes, subtly moving story
Gomorra – violent and chilling, but totally worth watching
There are tons more – wish I had more time for movies…
btw I love your blog – it’s the perfect fusion of fashion and food, i’ve been calling it rock n’ roll for gourmands

  3. karafina

ahhh, thanks for the suggestions…. love watching netflix instant.

    if you haven’t yet:

Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains- Diane Lane in her teens starts a punk band. (so awesome)
    LAGERFELD CONFIDENTIAL
Foxes- Cherie Curie from the Runaways
Pen and Teller Bullshit (all the episodes are hilarious)

  4. luxirare

I’ve seen the fabulous stains but I am going to watch it again now that you mentioned it (love Diane Lane too) I saw Lagerfeld confidential..just confirmed my theory that
Lagerfeld is too smart if there is such a thing.

  5. Eli

Personally I thought Lagerfeld Confidential was a bit dry, the Signe Chanel series was much better. They used to play the YSL documentary on IFC or sundance all the time. It was awesome. The John Waters movie Crybaby was surprisingly inspiring.

  6. Brandon

I just finished Jesus Camp (via Youtube); it was heartbreaking.
To Kill A Mockingbird is on my current queue.
Ghost World, any John Waters film (I am a fan of Female Trouble), Riding the Bus With My Sister, Selena, Equilibrium, The Matrix series, Julia, Orlando, Baraka, the entire Qatsi documentary series.

Have you by any chance seen The September Issue yet?

  7. luxirare

    Hi Brandon,
Yes…It was great. Grace Coddington was very inspiring to watch..a woman who is truly a genius in the fashion editing world.

  8. michelle

i really liked lust caution and don’t get why it got the reviews that it did.

  9. Denise

The Matador… highly underrated. Pierce Brosnan and Greg Kinnear = dynamic

  10. Kasi

Almost needs no suggestion as so many people have seen it but definitely Pan’s Labyrinth and its spiritual prequel, The Devil’s Backbone. I kind of really adore del Toro.

Elephant is very good because of the lack of words rather than despite it.

Anarchists is also a good movie but it’s the kind where I had to pay close attention or I’d completely lose track of what was happening.

  11. the Six Six Sick Girls

Ah, I just got Netflix too, and it’s been keeping me up all night. I’m personally addicted to the Tudors, mainly for it’s lush costumes and jewelry, less so for its soap opera recreation of history. Also, I really enjoyed The Valentino documentary if you haven’t seen it yet. Otherwise, I’ve already watched most of the good movies on there, so I keep on watching loads of crap on instant watch.

    xx

  12. anastassia

Lust Caustion is a really deep and touching movie.
The Butterflies are Free is an amazing movie as well. Great play on character.

  13. Robyn

both of these are old movie but i love them!

All About Lily Chou Chou. Not for everyone, but it’s one of my favorite Japanese films. I also love the music.

    http://www.lily-chou-chou.jp

Quills… an oldie but goodie about the Marquis De Sade.

  14. Brigadeiro

I love French movies: Amelie, Hors d’Pris (or Priceless), A very long engagement, Hunting & Gathering (all have Audrey Tautou). Love the movie ‘Hero’.

  15. clare

watch ‘the fall’ by tarsem singh. your eyes will thank you. i wont try explain any of the plot as it sounds awful but best visuals i have ever seen.

  16. Jorraine

    2046 – Wong Kar Wai
Ichi the Killer – Takashi Miike
The Road Home – Zhang Yimou

  17. MadeleineLouise

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas – For a good trip
    otherwise I’m out of ideas
I don’t watch enough movies obviously..

p.s did you ever get my reply to your email?

  18. pam

You seem like you have a lot of patience with movies. In that case, you really need to watch The Ballad of Narayama by Kinoshita, Kurasawa’s lesser known contemporary. The end is haunting, but you have to slog through a 30 minute climbing sequence. It’s about a remote Japanese village with very few resources. Incredibly beautiful.

AND since you’re a foodie you need, need, need to watch Babette’s Feast.

  19. miss a.

I’m slightly obsessed with Gael Garcia Bernal, and “The Motorcycle Diaries” was incredible. Fantastic scenery, romantic ideas, and a hot man with an Argentinian lisp. Loves it.

  20. alanna

no reservations season 6 is up, but you might know that already
i watched arachnaphobia too, and found out it was actually a cheesy comedy instead of the movie that scairt me 20 years ago. ha!

  21. jae

in the mood for love is the best. subtle and beautiful cinematography

I kind of loved, “letter from an unknown woman”

  22. jae

Oh and diving bell and the butterfly

  23. STEFANIE

The Darjeeling Limited is pretty entertaining, Last Life in the Universe is beautiful and Aanrijding in Moscou is a very nice movie (got lots of prizes) – don’t know if you’ll find that one since it’s from belgium :) I also love Hitchcock’s movies: Rear window (!!), Vertigo, Rebecca, Psycho,…

  24. JK

The Devils (K. Russell, starring Oliver Reed and Vanessa Redgrave). Not sure if it’s even on DVD, but try to see it. Visually incredible and wild. (At least look up the plot. It’s crazy. It’s also true!)

    On Netflix:
Everyone Says I Love You (woody allen). Very charming and comforting.
    Juliet of the Spirits

  25. wen

just saw ‘departures’ and wept like a little girl. it’s a moving film.
also loved the planet bboy documentary on netflix. will appeal to anyone who dances in any form.

Rivers and Tides documentary on artist Andy Goldsworthy

  28. Hannah

I’ve been indulging in every Law & Order SVU episode ever released but that is a path you probably don’t want to go down. Other than that I enjoyed Honore’s Love Songs recently.

  29. luxirare

No I don’t want to go down that route, although I do enjoy svu very much..It can get extremely depressing.

  30. Amanda

Let the Right One In. Its a Swedish romantic horror movie about vampires…Its wonderful though. And great this close to Halloween.

  31. Chelsea

I think that you would love Inside, it’s a relatively new french horror movie. Beatrice Dalle plays this psychotic baby snatcher woman. Also the Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant is incredibly inspiring, I can’t think of a better “fashion” movie.

  32. Rosemary

I love Lust, Caution! I saw it in the independent theater a year or so ago. So great! <3

  33. loie

i agree with ‘the diving bell and the butterfly.’

if you are into dance, i would highly, highly recommend ‘amelia’, choreographed by eduoard lock for his la la la human steps dance company. in fact, i would recommend it even if you weren’t into dance- you would find the use of camera work and the environment breath-taking.

    http://www.opusarte.com/pages/product.asp?ProductID=135

  34. luxirare

Amelia sounds cool, I like anything that features unique camera work.

  35. Helen

You’ve mentioned that you appreciate fine arts so I would strongly suggest Tarkovsky’s classic “Stalker”. It’s the most beautiful thing ever captured on film.

  36. Jezebel

Watch it Instantly is the greatest. The Tudors, My Brilliant Career, Faithless, Marnie, Malcolm X. Sweet Bird of Youth, Black Girl, Shanghai Triad, The Great Ziegfield, Barry Lyndon…

  37. archipelago

I love having sundays to catch up on all the television i missed or watch shows/films online.

Signe Chanel is aan amazing documentary following the couture collection, karl and the dressmakers behind it. it’s so interesting and all up on youtube, subtitled.

  38. Katherine

Hooray Philip Glass! If you’re ever in Toronto there’s a few shorts entitled ‘Glass Pieces’ playing at the ballet. I saw it two years ago and fell in love with his music, so nice to hear it live.

  39. Katherine

PS I adore you and your work, I’ve been wanting to comment forever but words couldn’t describe how amazing I felt about what I saw so I passed.

  40. Helena

You should watch “In Bed With Madonna” (the 90’s documentary), if you haven’t already. I’m not a fan of Madonna, but the outfits are definitely worth checking out.

  41. luxirare

Well I always say blogs would be nothing without their readers, so thank you for supporting us!

  42. Kiev

Sure you already know Eyes of Laura Mars, but that’s on instant netflix. A good amount of Fassbinder, too. The “Tokyo” trio of shorts with one being a Gondry was surprisingly good. Love that Shelley pic always. It’s too bad she’s supposedly living in fear of aliens in Texas now, but I suspect she’s as cool as ever. That Yves film was astounding–especially the second part with the endless couture processes. The way he says “ravissante” and smokes all cross-legged and Proustian. Le sigh.

  43. BRIAN

    Toyko Zombie
Yes Netflix instant play only has the dubbed version
but the tone and style of the movie itself
the atrocious dubbing helps with the comedy

  44. fipe

    oh man, love philip glass

  45. jimmy

antichrist (with willem dafoe and charlotte gainsbourg). very dark, great dream sequences. some other good ones i remember were dogville, happy together, volver, notorious bettie page, farinelli, valentino: the last emperor, hula girls and la vie en rose. but i recommend home song stories for you especially.

i loved lust, caution. i watched it with mum but was sad that she (mum) didn’t understand the sacrifice she made at the end.

something more light hearted would be made in america and coneheads.
