‘Main Details
I don’t care that Balmain costs as much as a down payment for a house, or that his clothes are trashy, or that he isn’t the most intellectual designer. Not everyone needs to be “intellectual and innovative”. Sometimes, good is good end of story. Christophe Decarnin turned a dead house into a profitable brand and he deserves respect for that. I’m loving the patchworking of chainmail, croc, and the lacing details here. It doesn’t look at all trite to me even though I’ve been bombarded with the constant goth punk bdsm undertones in every fashion show/blog/magazine
Such a great party dress. All images from SPRING 2010 Balmain.

You can find alot of trashy laced up clothing that “looks” like this but still I’d want to buy this if I could.

Under super referential design, bdsm + croc + Xena the warrior princess. Its all okay with me.

Love the patchworking here.

I love Horyn and Menkes’ review, comparing and contrasting Balmain and Balenciaga’s same day shows. But i have to say they both apply superior skills (exponential!!) and integrity with the fabrics, craftsmanship, and level of effort–which sounds weird to say, but makes the case for high fashion.
Balmain had rips revealing crystal wounds, oil-spectrum colored chain mail, and croc skin you can practically hear creaking between movements. It appealed to passion, whereas Balenciaga appealed to the intellect. Not the worst dichotomy…
