Last meal before I die
Nothing I cook will ever taste as good as Popeye’s fried chicken. If I was ever penalized with the death sentence this would definitely be my last meal. Champagne, fried chicken from Popeye’s, and Sir Kensington’s ketchup. What would be yours?

I’m at whole foods at least 10 times a week. What about you? It’s way too expensive, but I just keep going back because it’s comfortable and they have a good selection of food. I’m always keeping my eyes peeled for new things, and in the sauce aisle I was distracted by this jar. So obviously I figured out it was ketchup, but why does this jar look so nice? There were two varieties, the ‘classic’ and the ‘spiced’. Naturally I reached for the spiced.

Upon further inspection, I found that there was Cilantro in this ketchup. A few of you who have been reading my blog since the beginning (like Nia and Josh) will know that I am a Cilantro fanatic. I was sold.

Perhaps what I like most about it is that it is just spicy enough, and that it isn’t so achingly sweet. Oh and there’s the Cilantro and Jalapeno in the mix, it’s just delicious. You will have to try it for yourself, and if you don’t clearly it will be your loss. Available here. (Or at whole foods, check the sauce aisle)

Popeyes is so good that I often wonder how KFC stays in business. I mean, just how is it possible?

And yes..there are the biscuits which are out of control. I wish I had some truffle butter on hand for these.

The other day I went to pick up my second jar of this ketchup because I am almost done with my first one, where’s my Heinz? I can’t find it but I simply don’t care! It’s like Heinz is the walkman, obsolete next to the iPod. Thanks for reading, more soon.

Yes! Popeye’s is very good! The Clipse have a song about it! we love it!
hehe, this is simply fabulous
Another post that reminds me why I love you. Eating Popeyes Chicken with fancy ketchup and champagne. Such a good balance of being down to earth and crazy awesome.
My last meal…..Alaska black cod poached in miso or Duck Confit accompanied by a bottle of champagne for sure.
Like you, I’m at Whole Foods a lot (5 X per week at least), but lately I’m finding the food at the farmers market to be way better…
On another note, will the leather skirts you posted a while back ever be available in the e-shop??
Have a great day!!
this is the most decadent post i have ever seen: fast food, really nice champagne and stylish ketchup! there is nobody in this world who could come up with a combination like this! but i am with you! i love Champagne, and i am talking about the french one, it is just a few hours away from here! but i love champagne like a girl from the country, easy champagne, not too fancy! just me, my champagne, my hubby and my sofa! have to ask where did you find those insane glasses, they look like chemistry glasses!
Yes girl, you LOVE you some cilantro! This looks like the most perfect picnic ever. Your blog has been really on point lately with the fantastic designs and then boom…POPEYE’S! Fantastical.
I love this! Especially the champagne. (:
xoxo
I do so wish that we’d have shops like Whole Foods (and more fried chicken & burger joints) in Sweden. American foodie culture is so rich, I’m terribly jealous! That ketchup looks wonderful, and the packaging is so pretty. I buy a lot of things simply because I like the packaging.
i love whole foods!!! LOVE LOVE LOVE! i go there almost everyday when i am at work, cuz it’s right in my work area! i spend too much monieeess there…
I’ve never heard of popeye’s before! Not in Malaysia… maybe there is… I’m not sure
Having not ever had the chance to try Popeye’s fried chicken I am left only with my great impression and lust for your amazing champagne glasses!!!!!!!
Enjoy your “meal of your life” classy girl
xoxoxo
possibly the funniest entry on luxirare!!!!!!
I keep going back to whole foods because they have so many gluten free products! It’s really hard to find gluten free cupcakes and bread that taste that good.
DROOOOOLING. Popeye’s for dinner it is… but with some raw honey instead.
Bruce Bruce does a bit in his standup about Popeyes. I’ve never had it! There aren’t that many around where I live.
My last meal: wendy’s 99 cent chicken sandwich or their 99 cent burger.
hahah this is adorable. Great photos – where can I get this ketchup!?
Those champagne glasses are adorable. Where did you purchase them?
And you can never go wrong w fried chicken especially pop eyes!
I agree with you that Popeye’s is delicious (the red beans and rice…heavenly). But have you tried Church’s Chicken? Their honey butter biscuits are to die for.
Haha this is awesome! I gotta admit, I’m more of a KFC fan.
There’s not too many Popeyes here in Toronto or where I grew up, so that may be why. Last meal before I die would probably have to be a bajillion McDonalds nuggets though, haha.

Popeye’s is SOOO delicious. I couldn’t agree with this post more.
Also, I love that one photo of the chicken strip dipping into the ketchup -the way the stream of sunlight is shining down on it make it looks almost holy. God approves!
Seriously? This post just made me love your blog even more. Popeye’s is the sh*t.. It puts all other fried chicken restaurants to shame.
This post just completely endeared me to you. Popeyes is so good that a friend and I found a 24 hour one at 4am, and had an entire conversation about why anyone on earth would ever eat at KFC when they can go to Popeye’s?? And don’t get me started on champagne, I drink it like most people drink water. Preferably a glass of Veuve Clicquot.
a honest, popeye loving ny girl?
we should date.
how do you make even fast food look sooo delicious? never heard of popeye’s before. but if i ever come across one, i’ll have that chicken! (oh, and the ketchup looks good!)
The chicken looks incredibly good, but the ketchup’s design of the label is amazing. Great use of fonts…
@Michelle – there is a Popeye’s in Malaysia…at Taman Tun in KL. I prefer Ayam Goreng McD’s, though…or even Wendy’s.
The KFC in Malaysia is better than the one in the States or UK – less soggy and more tasty (MSG-laden?). But the chicken pieces are waayyyy too big and rather circumspect IMHO.
That look so nice
Kinda classy fast food
The first time I went to a Popeye’s (this summer), it was near LA I think… we went in and there were no seats and there was this one-inch-thick bulletproof glass separating the kitchen and the seating area. We ordered through microphones and the food was put in a glass box which could only be opened from one side at a time.
It was in a pretty ghetto area, though…
My last meal before i die : will be a hambuger
I’m going to have to say a Steak’n'Shake Frisco melt, fries, and Merlot w/ lemon soda. YUM.
ghetto fabulous? popeyes was a staple in my chidhoo.
Fantastic idea for a post! I hope you don’t mind if I borrow it for my blog (all attributes to you of course!)
I live to eat. If it was my last day on earth I don’t think I’d even say goodbye to anyone. I’d just sit and eat all day long.
My ideal last meal would be homemade red curry chicken or a hot box from Slow Noodle Fast, a banana milkshake (banana’s are rare and expensive in Australia at the moment – about $15kg!), and some Mars Bar slice for dessert. Hells yeah!!
mmm mmm, champagne and fried chicken. Not what I would eat before I died, but definitely something I wouldn’t mind.
This is, without a doubt, my favorite post I have ever read on any blog anywhere. And I’ve never had popeyes chicken. I just love the juxtaposition in the photos. Makes me feel like I’m not some crazy weirdo alone forever in the world with silly conflicting wants and needs.
Thank you Thank you Thank you
I seriously love this post. You MUST try the biscuits with honey! Oh-so-freaking-good.
Where did you get your champagne glasses?
i dont know if i could decide wich could be my “last meal” if i had to choose….
but i agree with you about the master piece that you just create!!!
about Whole Foods…. i could live there….!!!!!!
Cilantro???? you should come to Mexico you will love it… cilantro everywhere…..
you are welcome anytime =)….
see ya!!
B
I keep wondering; when and how did you get such an interest in food and cooking?
Yes! I love the lack of snobbishness involved in combining fast food with champagne. Hmm, my last meal would be… Inari sushi, my mom’s roast chicken, and raspberries!
I am preggers and have cravings for POPEYES all of the time. I LOVE this. I expected to see something high end but when I read POPEYES I almost fell out of the chair but instead I just fell in love… =)
The crunchy sweet tart slow burn flushed and renewed by that wonderful not so dry quench. You’re killing me.
this is the best thing ive ever read
Sigh… I’m now in France, and we don’t have whole foods, or anything approaching the concept. I know, we have good food here, but no supermarket as good as whole foods or even trader joes. What do i do? Home made ketchup?
Mhmm Popeyes. My friend and I make a pilgrimage twice a year, once during the winter and once when school ends. We’d probably get heart attacks if we went any more often. Popeyes > KFC.
I have loved your blog for ages, starting with the edible ‘crayons’. I have admired you as an incredibly stylish and inspiring person, and your appreciation of food is a treat to read. This post makes you so much more real, so human, and it makes me so glad to read it. I feel like the world of fashion has become more tangible. You make me want to care about fashion because you make it so realistic and personal, as well as beautiful. Please keep blogging your adventures!
i’d like something with a lot of cheese as my last meal. some gruyere, some mozzarella… interesting thing to contemplate. might do a “before i die post” soon…
samesies on the last meal!!! POPEYES IS BEAST AF!!!!!
I hate cilantro but that ketchup looks really good! funny I missed it, I’m in WF more than I’m at home!!lol
I’m going to have to agree with you on that ketchup. Delish.
New Orleans popeyes tastes much better in New Orleans. Some say it’s the grease.
Whoa..total illiterate. I meant to say New Orleans popeyes > New York popeyes.
I think Kentucky Fried Chicken is better, with a very spicy ‘sambal’ and rice.
My last meal? A huge crock full of fresh, warm rice pudding. Or maybe Eggs & Soldiers. I don’t drink, so I’d probably just have water, no ice. Then, again, freshly squeezed orange juice would be great. Oh man, now that I think of it, and I don’t want to sound snobby, but the Taverna Romana restaurant in Rome had the best grilled lamb chops I’ve ever had. I’d travel to Rome again just to eat those. (Sliced so thin they were almost lacy and crisp.)
My last meal would be braised oxtail with star anise and juniper, cooked long and slow in the oven. Served with a little fluffy mash and peas. Drink would be this crazy Polish cherry/cranberry syrup I found at the local Turkish shop, mixed with icy cold sparkling water.
