Pie Pops
Alber Elbaz speaks about “lightness” during interviews before his collections. I think his summation of what women need seems pretty accurate. Yes, we need lightness/ease/mobility. I love the way Elbaz makes clothes. His Lanvin spring 2008 collection made me cry. I like lightness. He is rare, a genius, and I like that he is chubby. Pies should be light too. I don’t like big pies, with one flavor. I want to change everyday. I have internet, my iphone, and many choices. I’ve simply turned into a big ball of vacillation- going back and forth between a circle of different flavors/opportunities. This is why fashion blogs are so great. Mobility, I can access blog content from anywhere, magazines are heavy, they need to stay at home so my shoulder can rest. After I’ve had a little view on one person’s blog, I move onto the next and the next. All different. All fast, all immediate gratification. Pies, they need to be the same. I want a couple of bites, and I want to be done with it. I want to pop open my bag when I’m hungry and taste a little sweetness. I don’t want commitment. I want to be promiscuous with my food. I want to eat pie, but I don’t want a whole slice- I want to try other flavors too, but for just a little, and move onto another. If I have one slice, I may have guilt hanging over me all day. I want little pies, yes, with more pie crust than filling. 50 calories or less, no guilt. Eating pie slices makes me feel fat. Lolipop-Pies, perhaps this would work. Rotating flavors. Grab and go. In and out. Blackberry, pumpkin, apple, banana…my favorites. You see I am very slutty about my food. Yes this post revolves around lollipop sticks.

The different flavors.

Cinnamon, Sugar, cornstarch, these three were the main ingredients used to hype the filling. Cornstarch is for thickening.

I made blackberry filling with just sugar and cornstarch.

I label all my homemade jams and fillings. For some reason images work better for me than text. Sometimes I look at text and I don’t know what its saying.

With the same lolipop stick, I’ve sealed the pie, making indents all around the pop.

Very crucial to slather egg whites on pie exterior. This is what gives it the “Betty Crocker” touch. Without this, the pies wouldn’t look as blistered or nicely toasted.

Blackberry

Apple.

Pumpkin

Pies to go. Work friendly, Driving friendly, Boyfriend friendly, Cellulite friendly, and embarrassment free pie pops.

In case you’re into saving desserts, this is fridge friendly too. Pop em out when your friends are over. Or not.

July 23rd, 2009 at 9:08 pm
Those have got to be the cutest little treats ever. I love them, you are so organized. They seem ready to sell. I have been baking all day, I should try this next. Today I have made my grandmothers banana bread, and some chocolate brownies. I need help with the indulging part, time to have friends over.
July 23rd, 2009 at 9:24 pm

July 23rd, 2009 at 10:14 pm
A loyal reader since the beginning, this is the first post I've commented on, because a post like this simply demands a thank you. So, Luxirare: thank you for being one of the few to create innovative and inspiring internet content. The exquisite detail you incorporate into each and every post truly sets you apart from the blogging masses.
July 23rd, 2009 at 10:18 pm
YES FOOD POST. I think I might actually be able to replicate this one.
July 23rd, 2009 at 10:21 pm
wow adorable!! Perfect party favors. Do you think you could post up a recipe?
July 23rd, 2009 at 10:23 pm
Well, its mostly just sugar mixed in with fresh fruit, cooked with corn starch…Cinnamon was added to banana and apples. Apple pie filling is widely available…I don't like to post recipes actually because I don't measure. The pie crust is store bought.
July 23rd, 2009 at 10:28 pm
HOLY SHIT.
KAELA'S ROOM
July 23rd, 2009 at 10:35 pm

HOLY CRAP I'D BUY THESE IN A SECOND
'm pretty convinced you're some kind of creative prodigy..if you ever open a restaurant/boutique, i'd be all over it
and i love the presentation
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:07 pm
you are totally ridiculous.
and i mean that in the nicest way possible, because other words just don't seem to capture what i mean.
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:23 pm
okay honestly..i know you get this from everyone, every time you post something..but you have such great eyes for beautiful details and i really appreciate that. like, i've always appreciated people who care about little things and hidden details in..well, basically everything. movies, food, fashion and more. this is incredible, i can see how you put your thoughts into it and those look incredibly delicious, which is absolutely the most important part (to me) when it comes to food.
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:27 pm
to add something more ( not that my opinion matters since it's not a secret that you're very talented), usually, i AM attracted to food that are 'pretty' and 'cute' but the problem is, those are not always tasty. for example, many many many famous patisseries in new york. some of those cakes look literally unreal, but when you taste it, all you get is the taste of stale frosting. yuck. but your food, like the avocade salad, pizza, those lollipops, 'make sense'. but here i am, not even sure if I'M making any sense. hah
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:33 pm
too cool for school
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:42 pm
uhmm…. i want one! gimme!
i also want the gummi coke candies i see in the last picture..
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:44 pm
FUCKING GENIUS!
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:46 pm
I totally agree, a little taste of sweetness and on to the next thing. You are an amazingly talented person.
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:54 pm
These are amazing. Everything you do looks so professional and thoroughly complete – and this idea is so innovative. Only thing wrong is I'd need to eat about twenty to satisfy myself
July 24th, 2009 at 12:07 am
You never cease to inspire..
Thank you so much for this!
July 24th, 2009 at 12:11 am
You, mademoiselle, are exceptionally magnificent
July 24th, 2009 at 1:13 am
genius!
July 24th, 2009 at 1:37 am
You live, breathe, drink, excrete and purvey PURE creativity. The world needs ones like you. I attended art school and none were as caring as you about their work. The scientific edge of the photos. The lighting. The product of the lollipops itself. The gloves. The glass table raised above a white sheet. The labels as images. The idea. The execution. The blood of this blog is rich with life and everything you touch turns to gold!!!
July 24th, 2009 at 1:52 am
^ Pareesha's comment is amazingly well written.
so, listen..i'm gonna email you my address and you just pop those bad boys in some sort of freezer type thingy and send them my way, 'mkay? my grandma makes the sickest apple pie ever and she's old school about it so i'm sure these Pie-Pops (trademark that shit, yo) would leave her flabbergasted but i need them in my mouth like yesterday.
p.s. thanks for still talking about MJ, i feel like people are "over it" but i'm not.
July 24th, 2009 at 2:04 am
Pie Slut! You are such a freak. You save me from boredom in a blogland every time. Thank goodness for you. Willy Wonka would be proud.
July 24th, 2009 at 2:29 am

love foxyman
July 24th, 2009 at 4:59 am
MY GOD. I echo Pareesha's comments above.
But I must ask (and with a completely non-snarky intent)..
WHAT DO YOU DO FOR LIVING?
You don't seem too oldish, yet you have all the resources and time to do all of such amazing creations.. HOW?
I WANT YOUR JOB
July 24th, 2009 at 5:00 am
I just realized my mouth was hanging open the ENTIRE time I was reading this post. you are amazing!
July 24th, 2009 at 5:52 am
This is so innovative and I'm surprised no one has thought of it before..but I'm not surprised it was you who thought of it. I seriously think you should open a hybrid restaurant/boutique. People could order some of your yummy treats while they shop your amazing clothes! I would prob. be your first customer.

July 24th, 2009 at 7:53 am
To the person who asked how the pie crust was made,
It was store bought. Making pie crust is a big waste of time when stores make far more delicious ones. So as you can see, this is very , very, easy to make.
July 24th, 2009 at 8:34 am
luxirare, you are amazing
taking every post to the next level
July 24th, 2009 at 8:45 am
One word: Genius. And I mean it. And I am going to try and make those and I shall tell you how it turns out.
July 24th, 2009 at 8:58 am
This is such a fantastic idea…actually, so many fantastic ideas…the pops…the labels…everything's perfect!
July 24th, 2009 at 9:10 am
hahaha, you are an absolute genius xxx
July 24th, 2009 at 9:29 am
brilliant. i have never been a pie kind of girl – i always just want one little taste around thanksgiving or christmas, and i think this is definitely the way to go! now if only the ice cream that goes along with it could be made into a lollipop….
July 24th, 2009 at 10:12 am
no words can accurately describe how awesome this is
July 24th, 2009 at 10:46 am
my gran does small groundnut puffs (canton vernacular: "kok chai") i polish off fifty at once. definitely can do the same for these. brilliant..
July 24th, 2009 at 10:55 am
The most impressive thing about you is not even that you come up with so many amazing ideas, but that you actually have the motivation to painstakingly execute them. This is truly a rare quality in our ADD quick-fix 21st Century. Most people (especially in NY) have lots of talk about all things that they are going to do, but they never materialize.
This is truly impressive and inspirational. Thanks.
July 24th, 2009 at 11:17 am
wow, you are… amazing. seriously, your creativity with food and clothes is mind-blowing.
July 24th, 2009 at 11:19 am
My mind has actually been blown… like seriously the rest of my life has changed because of these little pie lollipops… You could make a million dollars from this idea!!
-Christine
July 24th, 2009 at 11:33 am

July 24th, 2009 at 11:40 am
I can barely wait for each and every one of your posts. I dream about your creations. I want to bottle you and sell you in high end boutiques. It's official, I'm stalking you.
July 24th, 2009 at 11:47 am
When I turned on my computer this morning I was hoping you had updated your blog. I've become so addicted to your entries that I actually think about it in my daily life.
This is pure genius. I'll leave it at that since many before me have said it better.
July 24th, 2009 at 11:50 am
How did you bake these?
July 24th, 2009 at 12:13 pm
This is brilliant! The world of pie is certainly getting smaller. First pie in a jar, now this. Thanks so much for sharing it with us.
July 24th, 2009 at 12:17 pm
oh wow, just amazing. Again luxirare I think you should have your own TV show or putting a book together. I'll be the first one to buy it

July 24th, 2009 at 2:39 pm
People will think I'm crazy, but this is the greatest food post in internet history so far. As someone who bakes pies on a regular basis, I'm truly in awe with this post. These pops are so simple and yet so innovative. I'm literially going to make these right now.
You are the best!!!

culinary mastermind
July 24th, 2009 at 9:15 pm
This is too fucking cute.
I really love how your anal rentiveness shows in the tweezer-sticker image, it's so cute.
If we didn't have pictures of you in all those gorgeous clothes, I would think you look like Dexter with the lab coat and all (from the Dexter's Laboratory cartoons) or some kind of sleek robot ala Terminator.
In Malaysia, we have this thing called "curry puffs" which is spicy chicken + potato curry in a small palm sized puff. Would be perfect as a savoury filling of these lollies!
July 25th, 2009 at 1:41 am
pie pops? fucking genius.
July 25th, 2009 at 3:02 am
pareesha said it best, no doubt. luxirare, your blog enriches my world and reminds me to think slowly and act deliberately. thank you!
I'm launching an online mag soon and would love it if you could create something, anything you'd like, for the first story?

July 25th, 2009 at 9:18 am

July 26th, 2009 at 3:11 am
omg these look amazing and delicious
July 26th, 2009 at 3:19 am
I love your posts and the elaborate (and aesthetically pleasing) production you make cooking a dish into, but I had to cringe at your comment saying you used store bought dough :/ The taste/quality/etc is not equal at all (same with the horrid boxed cake mix from last time) and I would've thought someone who appreciates other fine cuisine would know this! Oh well, you're still my favorite food/fashion blogger despite it.
July 26th, 2009 at 3:43 am
I'm gone for like, a month and you come up with amazing shit like this. Aaaahhhh you're killing me! Seriously… how do you even think of this stuff?
July 26th, 2009 at 4:01 am
Dumplings.
July 26th, 2009 at 8:03 am
wooow..
July 26th, 2009 at 8:37 am
Have you thought about a savory counterpart for these? Chicken or beef or lamb pot pie might be nice.
July 26th, 2009 at 8:43 am
I'm having a ridiculously difficult time finding roll out frozen/refrigerated pie crust dough. It all comes in ready to bake pie pans. What brand did you use?
July 26th, 2009 at 9:34 am
Denise-
There are definitely roll out ones, sorry you cannot find them..here is a picture of the one I used.
http://images.plumgoodfood.com/images/Kristin/mainstream/lg/262.jpg
Yes I definitely thought about doing savory and mixing it with this sweet post but I thought it was a bit much. I may revisit this pie pop idea for savory pies such as chicken, lobster, beef..spinach maybe…
July 26th, 2009 at 6:01 pm
ingenious!!
July 26th, 2009 at 6:41 pm
oh my freaking god. you are a GODDAMN GENIUS.
July 27th, 2009 at 8:26 am
I ended up finding the pie crust. I was looking in the refrigerated/frozen section while they were in the biscuit section. I used canned pie filling and I think it was just too goopy because I had a lot of spillage out of the sides. Ah well, I guess I learned my lesson. Next time I'll make the fillings myself. I am also contemplating sprinkling sugar in the raw on top before baking.
July 27th, 2009 at 8:56 am
ahhahaah u'r amazing!
i want to meet you!
<3
July 27th, 2009 at 9:54 am
i wouldn't mind a savoury version (spinach and ricotta?)….i love the photography and presentation of your work, it is incredibly beautiful, especially the attention to detail! i know everyone has said everything already but i thought i should put my two cents in
July 27th, 2009 at 10:36 am
haha loved your comment, so cute. one day when i finally make it to new york, we'll have to do the best post collaboration yet haha
July 27th, 2009 at 11:56 am
My yummy goodness! Love your photos!
July 27th, 2009 at 4:20 pm
These might be easy to make but I'm lazy. Sell these?

I was wondering where you got the little fruit stickers from? Did you make them yourself as well? Or where online could I possibly find them? They're adorable and would like to use them in an invitation project.
July 28th, 2009 at 10:57 pm
Phuong,
I actually printed the labels on clear round labels after using line graphics of fruit downloaded from the internet.
July 28th, 2009 at 11:00 pm

July 29th, 2009 at 1:04 pm
Thanks for the beautiful post!
Here are the questions remaining for me:
-Do you cook your fillings prior to baking the pops, or are the fruit/sugar/cornstarch mixtures "raw" until they are cooked during the baking itself.
-What is the clear wrapper that you stapled around each pop? It seems too smooth to be saran wrap.
-Where do you find a 1 7/8" dough cutter??
thanks so much,
Eric

The internet is the best and worst invention of the 21st century.
Just google "apple line drawing" and you will find several drawings can you use. I chose the simplest ones. Then organize them onto a label printing template and print them out.
Hope this helped!

These look AWESOME. I am a novice baker and need some guidance. I read through the comments and see how long to cook them but,
1. Do you flip them at any point to keep them from burning?
2. Are you using a cookie sheet to bake them on?
3. Do you cook them with the candy stick in them? If so, do you soak the sticks before placing them in the pies for baking?
4. Do you cook the filing first? (the sugar, corn starch, and fruit?)
Thanks for any help. It is greatly appreciated.

At the end of it, my mind was just blown away at how creative and ingenious you are. I mean, something so simple and logical, yet we've never (at least I haven't) seen this anywhere else. Bravo.

Not only is your commentary fresh & insightful, your presentation delightful, but your photography is top notch. Love the lollipies and shall be making these for my friend's houseblessing.
If she's lucky, there will still be some for her potluck when I arrive.

I cannot say how much I love this. My oldest starts first grade tomorrow (he goes to a year-round school) & I was searching for a special treat to celebrate. A pie pop will undoubtedly make his day. I'll be sure to post about it too. Thanks so much–you are awesome!

I think i'll try this for my empanadas. These would be great.
Empanadas are similar to pie and patties. They are made with seasoned gound beef. I add raisins (my fave), or eggs, and even cheese. yum

September 2nd, 2009 at 10:40 am
Pie pops are absolutely genius! Earlier this summer, I made peach and pluot jam, which will make perfect filling for the pops. Going give it a try this weekend and post the results on my pie blog (naughtypies.com). Again, what a cleaver idea!
September 4th, 2009 at 12:00 pm
These look awesome… I'm curious, how do they hold up for a couple of days? I'm thinking about making these for an event but I would have to make them 3 days ahead of time at the latest (probably more like 4 days). You mentioned refrigeration – how does that affect the texture of the crust? Do you just let them come back to room temp. before serving? Thanks!
September 8th, 2009 at 8:27 pm
This is such a cute idea! I enjoyed your post! Quick question – where did you find those cute jars and the awesome plastic lollipop stand? I would love to get a few!

what pastry do you use in your pie pops
how do you cook them
October 23rd, 2009 at 9:44 am
This is just amazing but why don’t you go for the little extra effort in making them vegan! No egg whites on the exterior for the Betty Crocker touch, use alpro soya cuisine for the same effect. Mind what your subtext is instead of publishing it as totally vegan. We will figure it out…..
October 24th, 2009 at 7:01 pm

I just tried these, and for future reference, chocolate does NOT work well as a filling for the pies. It bubbles out the edges really easily.
But I have a whole ton of pie crust dough leftover, and I’m going to try pumpkin and maybe cherry tomorrow.

Hi Luxirare
I’m a huge fan of your blog and I’m totally going to try this out!
I was just wondering where you got the containers that your cornstarch and cinnamon etc are in with the cute little shovels
are they air tight?
January 26th, 2010 at 4:44 am
Yay! I like most of your food ideas, but this is the first one I’ve found that’s easy enough that I’d actually make it!
I’d definitely make strawberry-rhubarb ones…that’s my favorite pie flavor. I love pretty much everything strawberry, but strawberry pie filling is just too sweet. The rhubarb makes it a nice mix of sweet and tangy. If you haven’t tried it, I’d highly recommend it. From your unique taste showcased in your blog, it seems like something you would like!
January 27th, 2010 at 12:14 am
I’m also wondering about the sticks used. I bought a pack of Wilton lollipop sticks got them home, realised it says not for oven use =( would wooden sticks like for shiscabob (sp?) work?
Thanks

Am currently cooking ones made with strawberry pie filling (sugar, tiny bit of cinnamon and an even tinier bit of nutmeg) and apricot jam since they were the only fruits I have left (need to get to the grocery).
I didn’t have sticks so I made them without and I pulled out all my pie know-how (ie: shortening/butter/flour ratio, chilling) to make these perfect.
A bit worried that the lack of cornstarch is going to make it super runny. Was wondering if you made real jams, boiling and all, or whether you let the baking process congeal it up?

OK, so bakerella is right, the crust:filling ratio is lacking. If there were a way to make the filling pack more of a punch/roll the dough thinner, this would be better.
Perhaps a crossover of your napoleans with this (use phyllo dough with apple filling to create a lollipop) would be more tasty. Albeit, more flakey which would ruin the on-the-go nature of the pops.
Conundrum of deliciousness!
