Egg Nog

Starting out, fake out egg nog with fresh fruit. If you want to know how to make authentic nog, click here.

White chocolate, melted over a double broiler.

Fresh Raspberries closeup.
DSC_0443

Tiny egg molds, I only covered a thin layer of it, because I want the eggs to be hollow.
DSC_0436

When the shell dries, put in fresh fruit.
DSC_0467

Add store bought egg nog. The main problem I have with egg nog is that its nauseatingly rich, I thought it would be good with some
fresh fruit to cut the richness.
DSC_0466

Add some white chocolate (melted) around the edges of the mold, and glue both sides together, put it in the freezer.
DSC_0482

Once they come out of the freezer, they should look like this. Crack off the edges so you have a nice round egg.
DSC_0380

The little eggs should look like this. You can continue to shave off the seams so its completely smooth.
DSC_0385

Now to make a shell for egg nog WITHOUT fresh fruit, the classic way, I used a regular egg, made a mold out of it, and then did the same thing I did for the little eggs, which was brush a thin layer and place it in the freezer, same exact way. If you want more shots of the mold making process, go back to my pumpkin pie post.

DSC_0509

To add some decoration, I used edible gold dust.
DSC_0006

DSC_0033

Use corn syrup to wet the powder.
DSC_0034

I used the spottiness of a quail egg shell to render my design onto the little eggs filled with fresh fruit and nog.
DSC_0047

You can present it like this…

Or this; branches with a plastic holder glued on.

DSC_0117

For the regular egg nog, heat up a metal chopstick directly through your stove and melt a hole into your egg.
DSC_0002

DSC_0014

To decorate, you can also use Edible gold leaf. This is more expensive than the gold dust. Whichever is fine.

You can serve it with the straw. You might scare your guests, its kind of really creepy if you think about it, but this is why you guys keep coming back to my blog…right? Don’t blame me if your friends heave home after they see this.

Or you can be less creepy and crack open the egg…

The raspberry gets worked into the nog, its great…Keep these in the freezer until you’re ready to serve.

  2. Nita Padavil

Absolutely amazing! Definitely want to try this out to impress people. Thanks for another awesome idea/inspiration.

  3. Josh

SO FUCKING BEAUTIFUL. I just checked in to leave a Happy Christmas message and I saw this. They’re exquisite. Remind me of the duck fetus egg thing from Phillipines though, the one with the straw. Hahah.

Merry Christmas, Ji. I hope you had a wonderful year and it’s been winding up good for you. :)

  4. TPS

    Awesome!
Seriously, your brain’s creative center must be in constant activity!

  5. Jennifer

i imagine my young, artsy new york friends would love these, think they’re clever & witty & lovely and also delicious, but my aging/eldery southern family with whom i actually spend x-mas would find these so bizarre! haha! the presentation on the branches is my favorite: beautiful and evocative of winter (bare branches, all the white) and christmas (gold’s such a festive color) and yet also humorous, knowing what’s inside…

  6. Michelle

    Stunning and so clever!
I’ve been curious, and had to ask…What lens do you shoot with? Such exceptional detail on the raspberry and gold leaf images.

  7. Violet Strychnine

I hate egg nog but yours looks amazing.

  8. Crystal

Man, talk about holiday spirit. Love that this was posted as it’s blizzarding outside. I am most definitely feeling holiday-y now!

  9. viva la sk

    my tweet was right.

    other-worldly indeed!!!!!

  10. Shini

All I can say is GARG in a very very very polite manner, only you can make food couture. btw can’t believe how similar the white chocolate egg looks compared to a real one, great shaving. Well, of the egg, obviously.

  11. sooshi

I hate egg nog but I’d eat this. Amazing job!

  12. f.

you keep outdoing outdoing outdoing yourself.
you’re inspiring in so many ways.
    thank you. :)

  13. anu

    wow.

  16. chloe

what about hannukah? i’d love to see what you could do with latkehs (potato pancakes)

  17. julia

BEST THING TO COME HOME TO AFTER A BLIZZARD. I heart yooooou. Seriously someday you’re going to have to feed me because we all know I can’t do this myself. haha

  18. k604bc

I don’t like eggnog… yuck… too creamy and thick… yuck… BUT I’d give it a second chance if it’s made like this… with white chocolate and real fruits inside please!!! Aahhh, I’d so try the LUXIRARE FRUIT NOGS! lol… sounds funny… but it looks really elegant and expensive :)

I’ve never tried the edible gold leaf/dust…. what is the texture like? I’m so curious about it… is it like chewing on sparkles/tin foil or something? Hmm….

  19. luxirare

hahaha yea I wasn’t too big on nog either until I had the strange urge to try it…Exactly why I added the fruit, it tastes better because the fruit is fresh while the nog is so cloying. The gold has an iron-y taste..Can’t really describe it..Its not that flavorful, it just makes you feel like you shouldn’t eat it or something. Also, had a hard time believing I was eating real gold.

  20. CALICO

    Amazing recipe!

    bravo

  26. Naomi Marie

I can’t abide eggnog but these look so fabulous. They are each like little miniature works of art, I wish I could put my hand through the laptop screen and pick one up! I particularly like the presentation – the way which you have nestled the eggs in the tree.

  27. duckalicious

once again you left me speechless, staring at those fabulous photos with my mouth slightly open, ready to drool. absolute madness!!!

  28. Rachel

    I’m salivating!!

    you are my addiction!

  34. R. Redhand

The choice of tart fruits is a stroke of genius, and as usual the presentation is both innovative and elegant. Have a very merry Christmas! I know you could make a guitar hero controller fashionable, here’s hoping for a post holiday photo shoot haha.

  35. Amy

In French eggnog is lait de poule (chicken milk). .

  36. archipelago

you leave me in awe yet again
have a wonderful christmas – your guests shall be in for a treat

  37. Sorvin

    wonderful, as always.

  38. Trista

I’m continually amazed at your talent for true haute cuisine. Thanks for the great ideas! I shall try them out one day.

  39. STOPITRIGHTNOW

I’d like to see what crazy things you do to a Guitar Hero! Super tricked out Luxi style.

  40. Katherine

Hahaha the little eggs are soo cute I’d have many a drunk guest going bananas over tiny chocolate eggs FILLED with EGG nog!! So clever.

  41. BEREX

You know what, I have never try Egg Nog but i will give it a chance with your version….. It looks fresh with the berries hihihi

I was checking the Press of the web site and I notice that there is a article from “El Universal” do you speak spanish???? and have you realized that your blog is read not just in U.S.????

    thnxks again

    xoxoxoxoxoxoxo

PS. can you please tell me where I can get a Gorila Fur jacket??? I’ll try to get one for my wedding “trash the dress” sequence, (wich you inspire, thank you :) ) and im having a hard time finding it….

  42. alanna

i love all the clinical shots!
i did a reg-nog vs fake-nog test and honestly they were both so tasty, I think it was just the sugar and nutmeg I wanted to begin with.

  43. iida

    beautiful and creepy
    the way i like it

ive never tasted egg nog, we dont really have it here in finland

  44. luxirare

    Try ebay. http://tinyurl.com/yh3rwcm

  45. luxirare

It tastes like a liquid creme brulee with nutmeg.

  46. luxirare

Yea I know right? Weirdly enough I prefer the store bought one.

  47. luxirare

    …weird…

  48. luxirare

Well I don’t know if I’ll get my hands on one yet.

  49. Devin

Its funny, the problem I have with eggnog is that it’s made from eggs, but this post makes me crave it! Thanks for sharing your ideas. I want to try and make this!

  50. gaby

Reminds me of a super amazing luxe version of a Cadbury Creme Egg – They are an Australian easter thing, you might not have them in the US

And I love this so much I feel like its actually something I could do too!

  51. lucy

love it!!! They look exquisite! Presentation is great as always. I’ll try these for sure. Hope they’re as beautiful as yours. Thank you, I think this just got me in the xmas spirit! Have a great christmas!

  52. Elene

This is awsome! I really love the branch presentation, it’s really striking. And the little fruit ones look soo tasty!
I like the small ones, you always do the small portion thing which is so appealing to me. I read somewhere that you get the maximum taste of what you are eating on the first three bites. After that, it’s like your palate has somehow learnt the flavours and you can’t appreciate them as well anymore.

I always wonder if you buy the clear displays where you present the food and ingredients or you ask them to be custom-made. Where do you find them? This and the spheric thechnique post display are gorgeous. I’d eat anything you’d put on those, is that weird?

  53. SHONA

this made me think a lot! Im not sure how you have the perfect props lying around your house to highlight the food but it does look good!

    Weird idea

but i like the thought of fruit egg nog.

how long does it take you to clear up after all this!!!?

  54. Nathalie

I’ve always thought eggnog was weird, but I always drink it when it comes my way. I think it’s strange that people love it so much that they have made it into an ice cream flavor. This reminds me of the Tropicana logo where the straw is piercing through the orange. I used to always want to stick a straw in an orange and drink it!

  55. SC

I was wondering where you purchase the clear displays too. We have chickens, and we never have anything to store them in. I just use a bowl. But one of those clear displays would be so much prettier in the fridge.

  56. luxirare

    Check http://www.jbprince.com for all displays

  57. Nia

This looks beautiful! Merry Christmas Ji, love to you and yours! xoxo

  58. SC

Thanks just checked out their website, and I want to buy everything.

  59. thehautepursuit

Wow, you are so effing brilliant!!! Your food/design esthetic is just mind blowing and so admirable! Hehe the egg [nog]’s sitting in the tree…..just lovely…..

  60. JW

    FUCKING INCREDIBLE

  61. Sputnik Sweetheart

another stroke of genius! you just gave me an idea for my wedding. thanks!

  62. fashion roadkill

Beautifully presented and it has my mouth watering! I think I’m the only person I know who likes egg nog. Thanks for this very cool post! Merry Christmas :)

  63. Alison

i can just picture luxirare slaving away in her stark white cavee…..bent over 30 mini gold eggs. with syringes.

    on that note, merry christmas.

  64. JP

I fucking love you luxirare! Thanks for being such a big inspiration to alot of people! Happy Holidays to you and more power to you!!! I’m looking forward to more surprises from you!

  65. luxirare

nope, not slaving away. Not bent over either! ha

  66. Sheena

This is such a wonderful creation. I’m not even a fan of egg nog, but I’d love to try and make it and see how it comes out! Great for the holidays.

  67. ++MIRA++

i love how u played on egg nog being made of egg. :) at least it doesn’t look like Balut. now THAT wouldve been weird. i actually like this alot.great success!

  68. luxirare

    I know, me too.

  69. luxirare

ah, thanks for the comment, but I’m also under pressure now!

  70. luxirare

Balut is something I wouldn’t eat, but the show “bizarre foods” with Zimmern makes me want to keep my options open. Though I’m still very far from the “try anything” attitude…still…he’s kind of inspired me to be non judgmental about food, even if Balut is a fertilized cooked egg…Very very bizarre indeed.

  71. luxirare

Yep so true about how taste is lost after 3-4 bites. That’s why I like Tapas style things cause you don’t have to commit to one dish. But then again there are certain dishes like Mac n cheese..I could just eat that continuously while watching californication episodes. Ha.

  72. luxirare

I clean up as I go, and I take the pictures in increments, I never do one thing all at one time. If I step away and take a break from something, it gives me perspective. If I do it all at once, I never get good ideas or figure out how to do stuff. I need time in between to absorb what I just did and then go back. The idea of using the branch came to me later on, if I did this post in one day I wouldn’t have had that idea. In between rest time is very important!!!

  73. luxirare

I did think about Hanukkah, I wish I could do it, maybe next year. Just been way too preoccupied…Sorry!!

  74. midori

love your food posts. though i’m rarely inspired to create the *exact* thing you’ve posted, the food posts definitely inspire me to “think different” and lead me to make something (or want to make something) that i never would have thought of creating on my own.

that said, i think that your chocolate egg cups are brilliant. i think a dark chocolate version would be awesome for serving framboise and that a milk chocolate shell would pair nicely with some sort of coffee and/or irish cream concoction!

  79. shang li

Your website is absolutely breathtaking. Your website was actually raved about on the radio station here in Singapore.

  80. pearlescent

The straws sticking out aren’t creepy at all unless if they were sticking out of a real egg (ew), they look very cute!! I haven’t tasted eggnog yet but I could imagine that raspberries have the perfect tartness.. I also like MIDORI’s suggestions :)
The packaging looks very gourmet and they make a great centerpiece! And the branches look like an edible Christmas tree! I wonder what a Luxirare Christmas tree would look like..

Good luck with the Guitar Hero! Happy Holidays!

  81. Sam

I always want to try some of your post, this is more do-able. But I am always scared DIY, because I suck at them. But it’s nice to see your creativeness.

  87. Shiri

So awesome! I think I’m going to try this!!!

I saw the Balut comment above. We got a guy at my work to eat it for $30 at our holiday potluck last week… More than half of the room had to leave because it was too awful to watch.

Anyhow, great post and happy holidays!

  88. Anna

I would totally gobble up that fruit version. Egg nog by itself is completely disgusting in my opinion!

  89. cathy

you are the most original blogger i know! hats off to u!

  90. Josh

So, i didn’t read ALL the comments, but did anyone mention yet how great an idea this would be for easter or Spring equinox parties? The tree is great, and you could also make little rice krispy treat nests like my mom did when i was a kid. I’ll be brainstorming seasonally appropriate fillings…you’re so right about egg nog, much too rich.

Happy holidays! Amazed as always, J

  91. luxirare

ohhhhhhh yes, very easter-y. In fact I was a bit afraid my readers would crucify me for confusing the holidays!
