Clown Town
Contrary to popular trends, I’m actually hardcore into ruffles. Christopher Kane’s ruffle collection was actually my favorite of his so far. I’m into looking at them, making them, and attaching them.
Don’t ask me how many yards I used. I had to buy a whole roll (60 yards).
Muslin. You can see its only half done but thats only because I needed to see the fit.

Rocky’s like Lohan. She loves the paparazzi.

Cut on the bias, and I also left the edges raw (Lanvin style). You can see the horsehair adding extra volume.

WOW, that's amazing! You're truly talented!
Must've taken a lot of time and patience to make a muslin AND the final. I love the material you chose. But a whole roll!? HOLY!
Anyway, I love your photos as usual, and your designs.
And I about getting more ideas by making something rather than drawing it.
*And I agree about …
amazing. the raw edge is perfect..the whole thing is perfect. and beautiful..
wow what a beautiful color! I want to bump into you on the street someday hehe – see you rockin' this kind of amazingness in real life!!
The only way to describe this is fucking epic.
This is my favorite project yet. I like the muslin in the asymetrical form.I admire your patience sewing all that trim on those ruffles, you must be OCD a little, at least.
I'm all for just going for it when you make something. Drawing it ahead is a real bitch sometimes, not really my style either.
I really hope you put this on and run down Park Ave or something. Give those UES ladies something to run from.
xo's to you…
your post made me squeal! i'm serious. i'm a sucker for ruffles, the more outrageous the better.
i was watching dangerous liasons yesterday, and felt super inspired. besides.. a young john malkovich.. yum!
This creation is how I would like to live my life: romance with an edge.
Totally worth the 60 yards. The perfect pink.
I was thinking about your floating fur idea and I think you should check out nuno felting straight on chiffon. I've been experimenting with the technique for my jewelry line for next fall. Unfortunately all the examples online are so bleh.
Thanks guys, your comments always make my day.
Liz-
I am OCD and as I said I went to vietnam and back sewing it and i honestly DON'T UNDERSTAND why I made it in the first place now that its done!
It's so beautiful! WOW, very impressive!
~vivian
I need to have some of your work!
Love the hot pink. Very flouncy! I love it..you're very very talented!
http://fashionroadkill-halifax.blogspot.com
damn, amazing stuff!
wow. i love this. pics are great. i especially love the SIZE.
Wow, the lushness of ruffles along the bottom of the cardigan, you amazing bitch.
You left me speechless. Like literally. Woah.
duuuuuuuuude. i am dying, in love with the muslin version. i friggin love it. i would buy the muslin version in a heartbeat! let me know when you decide your apt is overflowing and you need to purge some stuff
jayne-
yea there are too many damn clothes in my closet I'm trying to purge everything on ebay for now. I gotta make room for new children.
Oh my lord. That's breathtaking. I love the pink color. I have a weakness for ruffles, too. Can you make some for public consumption, please???
Wow I love it in pink! You're so talented.
so so so gorgeous!
you are a total inspiration.
This is by far THE MOST inspiring thing I've seen all month. I just want to thank you for writing this amazing blog and sharing your creations with the world!
Where do you find the time to be so amazing? Those boots, those tights, that perfect more blue than red but still not purple shade of pink.
holy mother ! that shade of pink is incredible. I had no idea about the ruffles, and that Kane collection is my fav too, those black super ruffle dresses? I die.
I want to shoot it so badly! I love how the color infuses itself but doesn't take away from any edge–and the raw edges. So feminine, playful, badass, and not ironic all at the same time. The only one who ever gets away with it is Alber, and now, you.
Also, the macro photos of the raw edges are just breathtaking.
Jesus Christ.
Question: Have you worn/will you wear this out of the home?
sophie
No
holy christbaby, this is epic. I am craving the muslin one, though. WERQUE
Hi LuxiRare,
You are SO inspirational. I've never taken a clothing construction course and tend to learn from all the books I can find. With that said, could you recommend a book or any other resource that I can get to learn about the different techniques to clothing construction. Similar to the info you gave about the difference between a straight grain and a bias cut ruffle.
Thank you for creating your blog
It has amazing content.
Cheers!

Spectacular!

Hoooly shit, you are so talented. I love the pink dress thing and how you've styled it. AWESOME!
keybe
its a little crazy to wear on a normal trip to whole foods don't you think?
this is amazing, the colour the hems the flow of it's better than nigeria falls'!! Are there a few panels for the ruffles part or it's just one long piece of cloth?
I stumbled upon your blog and you just birthed me an idea! I have a jacket likes this and was looking at some studs. Amazing outfit and the pictures are vibrant.
when i initially saw this in pink i pictured an 80's stay at home housewife, who's past her prime, sexually frustrated by her overweight, overworked husband and swans around the house in this while the handyman is over in an attempt to seduce him.
love how you subverted this image and made it your own. i think the raw hems and horse hair are really the icing on top of the cake.
thank you so much for sharing your creativity with us. it is much appreciate.
*appreciated.
holymotherof!@#$%^!!!!!!
you're so right about the F21 ruffles. i tried some on yesterday with jane and UGH so glad i resisted and went home empty handed! this post confirms it all!
i love both of these. the raw hemlines are superb. the white one would be more versatile. i can imagine all these kick ass outfits with it already…
lol to the lohan commentary
You are such a talented and a inspiration. Love this work, so pretty.=D

OH wow, I love the pink wrap. You need to show me how to make them. I need to go look at your Ebay site now.
Take care,
Nini
Wow! Love how you talk about and show the process. Final results are gorgeous!
impressionnant…. au début j'avais une horreur des ruffles… peut-être due au faite que l'on m'avais obligé à en porter durant ma jeunesse… mais la j'adore..je suis tombée amoureuse encore
oh my god are you kidding me!!!!!??? you have hands down the best blog ever, when i saw this i even felt shame for having a bloody blog!!! this is just incredible. love the muslin version just as much.
and by the way, i hate concept and having to justify every single colour, fabric, zip, button, stitch can't wait till i'm out of uni and can just make whatever the fuck i feel like making. amazing post as usual
:O
*speechless
Love how you juxtapose your outfit with the very feminine ruffles and the black attire.
holymoly i love your blog, just found it recently and scrolled through the whole thing. especially love the food parts, def food porn!
you continue to amaze me. I've never been a fan of ruffles but that has all changed thanks to this post
camille x
haha yep stacey is my bf… i can see how you'd be confused cause i kept referring to him as stacey sometimes and bf others! but he is the same person
oh man those shoes are insane, they were on ebay as well the other day. so good
same as Camille, i actually HATED ruffles and Luella's obsession with them in acid brights and other various designers has made the British Highstreet awash with poor imitations… but after this, and being able to understand the complication of a simple ruffle, i'm a convert!
you rock my socks.
You know what this whole beautiful piece + photoshoot reminds me of?
http://www.scattered-sea.com/deux/photo/uts/
The ethereal nature of the sheer + ruffle combo is sublime.
you should check out the ruffles from balenciaga resort 2010!
lovely post.
xo
The white one is really Victorian and seems like it could be better incorporated into your wardrobe than the pink one which looks too boudoir and cheesy. The white one strikes me as truer to your style of tough femininity.
cbermud-
I am actually kind of cheesy. I like SVU and popeyes fried chicken.
Joshua-
Those images are so beautiful. I wish I could do underwater photographer.
Keep feeling–
WILL DO
I don't think the hot pink is cheesy at all. I absolutely love both the muslin and the hot pink. I think that is the point of the cardigan, to really stand out and subvert the "cheesiness" of the color.
This is incredible! :O Goddamn you are so talented, I'm in awe!
Thats some stunning pieces youve got there! I love the pink one!
you're so talented!! i think i say this every time i post a comment. im curious, do u mind sharing where u've learned all these skills? school, sewing? im hoping for FIT, maybe u could recommend some school…thanks
It's gorgeous. Love it!
My oh my, this is INSANE! I love it.. i am so jealous of your skills. Your blog is by far my favourite.. you amaze me everytime. Well-done. x
wow. i'm not normally a fan of pink. in fact, i usually back away when i see pink clothes and ESPECIALLY pink ruffly clothes, but this is amazing. i would wear this in a heartbeat! now to where and for what occasion are different issues…
You never cease to amaze me! I love the cream version…gorgeous!
xx
I think the only question is: when do you plan on opening the Luxirare store???

I too dig SVU and Popeye's and I don't think liking the two necessarily makes you cheesy. Plus, I don't think pink is a cheesy color in and of itself. IMHO, the pink duster/cardigan seems like a weird departure from your usual brand of evil glamour. Still, I commend you for always trying something different. Your sewing skills are no joke and you should create a clothing line. You are astonishingly talented.
cbermud
No one should be expected to conform to the expectations of the public mind. Your expectation of me having to deliver some style surrounding "evil glamour" should not become my boundary. To say that you don't like something is a valid opinion, one that I should respect as you are different person from me, but to say that whatever I posted seems like a "weird" departure from my usual style is a little stifling to the process in which I create clothes. Everyone should have the freedom to depart from whatever point they please. Thank you for the compliment though.
Goodness, this exchange is way touchier than it was meant to be! *sigh* The Internet…
Again, the pink cardigan is not my bag but I respect that you continuously push yourself when it comes to clothes. And no, I don't have any expectations of what you should make. I wouldn't be surprised if you went minimalist in five years or wore Chanel. When I write that you have a usual brand of evil glamour, I mean that you have a signature style that people recognize, as evidenced here:
http://fashiontherapy.hautetfort.com/archive/2009/06/18/inspired-by-luxirare.html
Should you adhere to it if you don't feel like it? Nope. Designers often don't make clothes they actually wear (really, do any?) At the end of the day, you have to please yourself.
But you gotta admit, you do have a look. And it's awesome. =) Do keep following your creative instincts wherever they take you.
wooooooooooooooooow this is soo cool i love your blog
visit my blog at http://www.oreiabatan.blogspot.com
so, i had to come back and take a beter look at this entry one more time..
anyway, i have to say out of all your projects so far, this has to be my favorite for several reasons. the color, the level of craftsmanship, the drama, and the unpredictability. i suppose what i'm most impressed with is the gathering.
i'd love to wear this in a similar way to how you styled it oooor around the house and pretend i'm a modern day jayne mansfield (i love her).
wow amazing! not to mention the jacket…
XX
Wow, you're so talented! Love your designs. I'm really into ruffles this season, too.
Have you tried to construct a snail for flounces? It's working out what measurement you'll need, placing a center point and half of the measurement on either side, and using a tape measure with a hole it's just a matter of using half the measurement, the full measurement, and twice the measurement to follow it around to create long bias cut flounces. Your work is delightful, tell me about going to hell and back, sewing can be a nightmare.
That looks very cool! I would like to have one of those as a nightgown
That would be pretty.
x
absolutely awesome, what I love most is the photography though, can't believe how dynamic you make it without even have a background. Love the one where you're sitting against the camera and the frills are just flowing out from under you and studded arms… i pretty much love ya
The color is stunning and the ruffles are beautiful and feminine! Amazing!
The most stunning ruffles I've ever seen…
YOU.ARE.INCREDIBLE.
TRULY.

this is beautiful.
I love these pictures! This is such an interesting piece. And thanks for the descriptions of different kinds of ruffle designs!

Oh my gosh these are amazing! Love your work.x
Hi!
I just came across your blog its really cool! I have a question: where do you get your personal labels made? They are amazing!
x
I am speechless
you are forever an inspiration. AMAZING. You are so talented.
You are epic. EPIC.
The ruffles are beautiful. I've never paid much attention to the difference in ruffle shapes and volume, but I can see the difference here.
Amazing job.
this is so amazing!! i have 2 questions if you don't mind…
what is the fabric made of?
and what is keeping the edges from fraying into infinity?
love your blog.
Sarah,
you have to stitch down right at the end of the fabric, right before its starting to fray.
Its made of poly chiffon
Let's mutate together.
that jacket is amazing
the black studded one.
This is amazing. The sewing technique reminds me of typical flamenco dresses. The ruffles are sewn the same way to give them the “movement” and volume that this gown has. Your designs are always shocking, and that is what I like most of it. They do cause an impression
laksd
WOW you are AMAZING <3
If you keep making great posts I will come back every day to keep reading!
